My goal when taking pictures is to transform the recognizable object into pure form, color, and composition, such that the “thing” stops being the label of the “thing”, but becomes pure abstraction. I have no desire to take a perfect photo, only to take shots that strip the world of labels. Travel does this as well. It takes one outside of “knowing”. If we look hard enough into our own hometowns, they are just as strange as foreign lands, but somehow getting in a car, plane, train, we have the ability to see the world as it always is, uncontrollable and full of curiosities. I take the same compositional photos on trips as I do at home, but skulls and dolphins and sunshine are hard to come by in the Northwest. So I will continue to travel in order to see the world as “the beautiful curiosity”.
